VELASQUEZ-WERDUM FIGHT IS MMA NITROGLYCERINE

Velasquez-Werdum UFC 188

Velasquez-Werdum UFC 188

Los Angeles, CA- UFC heavyweight (265 lb.) champion Cain Velasquez (13-1) returns Saturday night at UFC 188 after a year and a half away from the cage when he faces Fabricio Werdum (19-5-1) at the Mexico City Arena in the Mexican capital for the main event of UFC 188.

CAIN CAN BE MEXICAN GOD LIKE JULIO CESAR CHAVEZ SR.

Velasquez, whose parents are Mexican, will be looking to make a statement against Werdum to send the fans home happy.  With the Mexican demographic the biggest piece of the Pay Per View pie, Cain has the potential to reap record paydays that will not make quite Floyd Mayweather-like money, but the upswing can be worth many millions!

VELASQUEZ-WERDUM TO CAUSE MEXICO CITY QUAKE?

Tune in to this one, folks! this is one of the most compelling fights of the year thus far.  Werdum has improved dramatically since being knocked silly by Velasquez’ punching bag Junior “Everlast” Dos Santos (17-3) in 1:21 back in 2008.  Cain will need to show up in top form, and he will versus the soon to be ex-interim champ. I say Velasquez will put a brutal beating on the Brazilian UNLESS “Octagon rust” and Taco truck visits have ruined the champ.

EX-CHAMPS BATTLE IN POTENTIAL “SUPER FIGHT

Former Strikeforce lightweight (155) champ Gilbert Melendez (22-4) will square off with former Bellator lightweight champ Eddie Alvarez (25-4) in the co-main event. Alvarez will stop Gil in a war in front of the Mexican fans there to see the Strikeforce alum.

CAN EDDIE’S CHIN GO THREE ROUNDS?

His punching is simply too accurate for the sometimes sloppy Melendez, who was nearly knocked out by a washed up Diego Sanchez (25-7) in their 2013 Fight of the Year candidate.  This fight doesn’t quite carry the significance it did back in 2010 when both men were at the top of their respective organizations, but it will still be a highly entertaining match between two of the best lightweights in the world.

LAST WEEK’S UFC FIGHT NIGHT A SURPRISE SUCCESS

Dan Henderson "Fitting in" in New Orleans

Dan Henderson “Fitting in” in New Orleans

Middleweight (185) vet Dan Henderson (31-13) scored a brutal KO of Tim Boetsch (18-9) in the main event of UFC Fight Night:  Boetsch vs Henderson.  It took Hendo just 28 seconds to leave Boetsch horizontal after a massive H-Bomb detonated on his chin.  This would be a perfect time for the 44-year-old Henderson to hang them up for good.

KNOCKOUTS GALORE ON UNDERCARD

Heavyweight Ben Rothwell (35-9) choked out Matt Mitrione (9-4) in 1:54 in the chief support.  Aside from that, it was all knockouts on the main card.  Lightweight Dustin Poirier r (18-4) stopped Yancy Medeiros (11-3, 1 NC) in 2:38.  Featherweight (145) Bryan Ortega (9-0, 1 NC) knocked out Thiago Tavares in 4:10 of round 3.  Bantamweight (135) Anthony Birchak (12-2) knocked out former title contender Joe Soto (15-4) in a minute and 37 seconds.

MAIN BILL CURTAIN CURTAIN RAISER RATHER QUICK!

In the opener of the main card, Francisco Rivera (11-4, 1 NC) destroyed Alex “Bruce Leroy” Cazares (10-8, 1 NC) in only 21 seconds in their bantam bout.  It was a card that certainly exceeded expectations as far as stoppages are concerned, but also a card full of mismatches.  Still, on pure entertainment value, this was a winner.
