CORMIER CRUSHES RUMBLE

DC

DC

Los Angeles, CADaniel “DC” Cormier (16-1) became the new UFC light heavyweight (205 lb.) champion by out-grappling Anthony “Rumble” Johnson (19-5) in the main event at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, NV.  Cormier was abe to survive a first-round knockdown to dominate “Rumble” on the ground.  After more than two rounds of vicious “ground and pound” that left Johnson visibly woozy, Cormier was able to secure a rear-naked choke that ended things in the third round (2:39).  Cormier has already been beaten by the real champion, Jon Jones (21-1), but Jones’ out of the cage struggles will keep him sidelined for the foreseeable future.

WEIDMAN POUNDS OUT BELFORT

Middleweight (185) champion Chris Weidman (13-0) suffered a cut early in his bout with Vitor Belfort (24-11), but quickly took Belfort down and battered his face until referee Herb Dean called a stop to the contest at 2:53 of the opening round.  It was an easy night for the champ, aside from the cut.

COWBOY BREAKS FOE’S JAW

A series of head kicks and punches from lightweight (155) Donald Cerrone (28-6, 1 NC) broke John Makdessi’s (13-4) jaw and forced an early end to their contest.  Cerrone extended his win streak to 8.  Time: 4:44 round two.

EX-UFC HEAVYWEIGHT (265) CHAMP MAKES STATEMENT

Andrei Arlovski (24-10, 1 NC) knocked out Travis Browne (17-3-1) in just 4:41 after a wild war. It was Pitbull’s 5th straight win and 3rd knockout in that stretch.  A decade after winning the belt, Arlovski has found new life that could earn him a crack at the UFC strap.

BENAVIDEZ AND DODSON RETURN

Elite flyweight (125) contender Joseph Benavidez (22-4)  scored a UD 3 over John Moraga (16-4) in a fight that was a great way to kick off a solid main card of UFC action.
