San Francisco, CA– When you mention the name “Gracie,” you’re either talking a 1950s TV sitcom, or the family that spawned Gracie Jiu Jitsu and from that came the form of competition we know today as the Ultimate Fighting Championships. That being said, former UFC fighter and now trainer/manager told the Japanese news service Tatame, “Everybody is taking (steroids). The difference is that Anderson (Silva) probably lost control of when the substance would be out of his body.”

GRACIE RISKING WRATH OF UFC?
Gracie, 48, a UFC, K1 & Pride veteran who leads the Renzo Gracie Combat Team of New Jersey, went somewhere few people in the sport have dared to go on steroid use in the UFC. He is painting a broad picture of the UFC being a steroid driven machine of competing men and women. For the record, the aforementioned Frankie Edgar, who faces Urijah Faber in a fight with huge implications in April in the Philippines, while Chris Weidman has Vitor Belfort at UFC 187 in May, are both handled by Renzo Gracie.

Having performed well enough to garner a quartet of Golden Glove titles, the only thing I ever took in the way of drugs was coffee the day of the fight. It helped keep me “on edge,” the place you want to be mentally in order to have the right combination of fear and confidence. So if the stuff were available during my time, I can tell you that my circle, fellow Golden Glove champs Hector Martinez, Lenny Albert, we would all have passed. Look, if you can’t fight and win clean, you didn’t belong in the ring.

What is Dana White doing when guys show up obviously with enhanced bodies, looking the other way? And if the UFC and White don’t put their performance enhancing drug issues in check, their billion dollar brand might suffer begin to suffer irreparable damage coming from two directions. One, people get turned off because of the steroid issue and back away from the UFC, or somebody gets killed in the cage at the hands of somebody on steroids. Dana White has the ball, will he throw a TD and mandate year round testing? Or will he instead punt and hope the 800 lb. Gorilla in the room just goes away, but that’s not going to happen.
