Born in Russia, the 30-year old boxing superstar in the making, Sergey turned professional in July 2009 in the boxing hotspot of Greensboro, North Carolina. Stopping in South Carolina before making his way to the west coast, Kovalov, went 9-0 with 7 first round KOs and two in the second. A close Split Decision on the scorecards win over Darnell Boone (who knocked down World 168 lb. king Andre Ward) was rectified with a KO 2 of Boone in a rematch.

When then undefeated ex-WBO king Nathan Cleverly sat down after the opening round with Kovalov he said, “He hits hard.” Downed twice before a TKO 4 ending, I couldn’t recall Cleverly ever being decked prior. The body language of Cleverly from that first break between rounds was so telling. He knew that he was not going to beat Kovalov (23-0-1, 21 KOs) that night without using a club.

The WBO #14 ranked contender is unbeaten (26-0, 13 KOs) whose claim to fame is his besting Yusaf Mack last time out and Zab Judah’s brother Daniel a few years ago. Outside of that, Agnew has 18 guys on his resume that fought him with losing records like 7-32 for example. No disrespect intended, but this fight has mismatch written all over it. Kovalov should execute mercy killing before nine. Although they say never count out an undefeated boxer going into a fight, you can in the case of Cedric Agnew begin counting!
