THE KING CANNOT BE BULLIED!
Ontario, CA– World champion Andre Ward (27-0, 14 KOs) pitched a shutout against formerly undefeated Edwin Rodriguez (24-1, 16 KOs). From the opening bell, Ward landed crisp blows to the head, while Rodriquez was swinging at air for the most part. In round 4, referee Jack Reiss took 2 points from both fighters after getting tagged while trying to separate them. It was an unneeded move but had no bearing on a masterful performance by Ward. Scores were 118-106, 117-107, 116-108 for the king of the super middleweight (168) division.
RODRIGUEZ PUSHED REFEREE TO HIS LIMIT
Although nobody knows what is going on in someones mind, referee Reiss appeared beyond just irritated with Rodriguez and rightfully so. The Dominican fighter, forget the fact he didn’t make weight for a championship fight, committed foul after foul, before and after the deduction of points. He could have been DQ’d a number of times.
FORMER AMATEUR STANDOUT CLIMBING LADDER
Super middleweight contender Brandon Gonzalez (18-0-1, 10 KOs) won a unanimous decision after 10 over Jonathan Nelson (18-1, 8 KOs). Nelson started well and won the first two rounds on my card, but was soon bullied on the inside by the shorter Gonzalez and was handled for the most part in his first professional loss. Scores were 99-91 twice and 98-92.
FIRST CONTENDER CHAMP MORA SCORES RARE STOPPAGE
Sergio Mora (25-3-2, 8 KOs) recorded a rare stoppage win as referee Raul Caiz Sr. waived his bout against Milton Nunez (26-9-1, 24 KOs) off at 2:53 of round 5. Mora dropped Nunez with an uppercut and finished him off with a flurry of shots that brought about the stoppage. Mora seems to have new found power at 160, though he should stay far away from Gennady Golovkin (28-0, 25 KO), who he has been calling out recently.
