CANADIAN HEAVYWEIGHT HAD HEAVY HANDS!

Gordon Racette

Gordon Racette

San Francisco, CA– With the advent of Facebook and other social media venues, you find yourself coming in contact with people you haven’t heard of or about in decades.  That being said, Gordon “Gordy” Racette recently celebrated a birthday.  A Canadian heavyweight, Racette was an extremely good looking guy at 6’2 & 225 lbs. who could fight a bit.  Gordy went 25-0 with 18 KOs before engaging one time uncrowned champ Jimmy Young (Muhammad Ali got 1976 gift in Landover, MD) in 1982.

BOXING FROM 1979 TO 2000*

The resident of British Columbia, Gordy  was supposed to beat Young who had just been hammered mercilisly by Gerry Cooney (K0 4) in his previous outing, thus most people in the biz thought Racette would win against Young.  One scenario had Racette facing two more guys max and the Canadian would get a title shot.  In days prior to the Internet, Hall of Fame writer Jack Fiske was the guy who used to mention Racette in his Tuesday and Saturday columns in the San Francisco Chronicle.

FOUGHT TWO WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPS

Fighting primarily at home in British Columbia, Gordon Racette went 39-6, 28 KOs.  His career was stalled in 1983 losing to ex-WBA heavyweight titleholder Tony Tubbs inside the route.  Of those six setbacks, the Canadian lost to two recognized heavyweight champs in Tubbs and Trevor Berbick.  With a win over Scott Ledoux in between the losses, Gordon had a couple of comeback fights in 1992, before coming back near the age of 50 in 2000 and nabbing a six round decision making his final curtain call a winning endeavor.  Happy Birthday, Gordy!
