MARTINEZ-CHAVEZ A “THRILLER” IN ONLY FINAL STANZA!

Thomas & Mack Center, Las Vegas, NV– (HBO PPV) Sergio Martinez (50-2-2, 29 KOs) Unanimous Decision 12 Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (46-1-1, 32 KOs) (World 160 lb. title) It wasn’t close as Martinez ran off the first 11 rounds. But in round 12, Sergio cut over his left eye around round seven was dropped and beaten up pretty good in the final stanza. This was Chavez’s only chance to win and he came close by decking Sergio. Martinez deserves some blame for his perilous final round as he refused to run or grab and hold once he was hurt. Enjoy this international video feed of final round!

DE JA VU JULIO CESAR CHAVEZ-MELDRICK TAYLOR!

Chavez Jr. Post Fight By Mary Ann Owen

That 12th round was a nail-biter for those who were backing the Argentine now living in Oxnard, CA. Scores were 117-110 & 118-109 twice. In a nutshell, Chavez got schooled for all but one round. Dumb (but gutsy) move by Sergio to go looking for the final round KO as he almost got it himself! Final round sort of like Julio Chavez Sr.’s win over Meldrick Taylor in March 1990 where the father did come from behind to stop Taylor with just a few seconds left in the match. Tonight, Jr. could not duplicate Sr.’s miracle!

Roman Martinez (26-1-1, 16 KOs) Split Decision 12 Miguel Beltran (27-2, 17 KOs) (WBO 130 lb. title) Cards read 114-113 twice for Martinez while the third judge had Beltran winning 116-111. A one point deduction cost Beltran a draw in this vacant WBO title scrap.

TWO-TIME GOLD MEDAL WINNER PREVAILS & JETTISONS TOP RANK!

Guillermo Rigondeaux (11-0, 8 KOs) UD 12 Robert Marroquin (22-2, 15 KOs) (WBA 122 lb. title) Scores were 118-110 thrice as the Cuban dropped Marroquin twice, once in the fifth and again round 12. Some rail birds thought the Cuban was hurt twice. He is now a free agent as his Top Rank contract has run it’s course!

MIDDLEWEIGHT (160 LBS.) CONTENDER TOO MUCH FOR EX-154 LB. TITLEHOLDER

Matthew Macklin (29-4, 20 KOs) KO 1 Joachim Alcine (33-3-1, 19 KOs) Time was 2:26. Once a 154 lber., Alcine was battered and dropped twice.

Joe “Fair But Firm” Cortez

JOE CORTEZ WORKS FINAL FIGHT AS THIRD MAN!

MGM Grand, Las Vegas, NV– (Showtime) Saul Alvarez (41-0-1, 30 KOs) TKO 5 Josesito Lopez (30-5, 18 KOs) (WBC 154 lb. title) As predicted, mismatch on Showtime as Lopez was dropped with a left hook to the body in rounds two and three, was battered and decked again in round four. Referee Joe “Fair But Firm” Cortez retired after this fight, as was planned! An iconic referee especially to Puerto Rican fans, Cortez was just as advertised, “Fair But Firm.” We wish this great family man the best whatever he decides to do or not do from this point forward.

PONCE DE LEON DETHRONES JHONNY GONZALEZ

Daniel Ponce De Leon (44-4, 36 KOs Technical Decision 8 Jhonny Gonzalez (52-8, 45 KOs) vs. ) (WBC 126 lb. title) Gonzalez was dropped in the sixth and suffers cut from clash of heads early in the fight and again in round eight forcing the fight to the cards that read 77-74 & 79-72 twice, all De Leon.

TIME FOR MOREL TO FIND ANOTHER VOCATION

Leo Santa Cruz (21-0-1, 12 KOs) TKO 5 Eric Morel (46-4, 23 KOs) (IBF 118 lb. title) Almost as old as promoter Bob Arum, Morel quits on stool. Wasn’t dropped, but I guess he saw it coming!

Marcos Maidana (32-3, 29 KOs) TKO 8 Jesus Soto Karass (26-8-3, 17 KOs) Time was :43. MM overcame sluggish portions of fight to prevail.

WORLD’S BEST(?) CRUISER HAD BAD NIGHT!

Stechert Arena, Bamberg, GermanyYoan Hernandez (27-1, 13 KOs) UD 12 Troy Ross (25-3, 16 KOs) (IBF 200 lb. title) Thought this would be easy for Yoan, it wasn’t. A war ensued for most of round three, Yoan was dropped in five, but regained control and won with scores of 114-113, 115-112 & 116-112. Simply put, Ross deserves a rematch with 6’4 Cuban.

SOMEBODY’S “O” HAD TO GO!

Mateusz Masternak (28-0, 21 KOs) TKO 8 David Quinonero (27-1, 26 KOs) MM gets “W” with dominant performance that prompted Quinonero to quit after seven!

THE “OTHER” DONAIRE LOSES ON TELEMUNDO

A La Carte Event Pavilion, Tampa, FL– (Telemundo) Omar Soto (23-9-2, 10 KOs) UD 12 Glenn Donaire (19-5-1, 15 KOs) Scores were 118-110 twice and 116-112. The brother of Nonito Donaire might just go back to driving a bus full time!
