Wlad Klitschko Flattens Another Chump

New York, NY– This summer’s hot schedule of fistic action continues to burn this weekend. Due to the enormity of scraps about to transpire over the next few days, below is a “Reader Digest” type preview of the televised bouts beginning with the featured attraction.

WBO/IBF super bantamweight (122) belt holder and top ten pugilist on most expert’s “Pound for Pound” list, “the Filipino Flash” Nonito Donaire (28-1, 18 KOs) laces ‘em up in attempt to defend his trophy against unheralded pug Jeffrey “Mongoose“ Mathebula (26-3-2, 14 KOs) in a slated 12 frame contest from Home Depot Center in Carson, California, Saturday at 10 PM ET on HBO.

MIGHT BE OVER IN A FLASH

Battling one if the best battlers the game has offer in Nonito Donaire, mediocre (at best) scrapper Jeffrey Mathebula is fighting out of his home land of South Africa for the first time in his career. In addition to this huge disadvantage, further issues for Jeff is that Nonito’s highlights over his last dozen sinister bouts include breaking the face and smashing the nose of rough brawler Volodymyr Sydorenko (W KO 4) and starching former two-division belt holder Fernando Montiel with an electrifying second round one-punch knockout. Let’s hope that a successful win on Saturday for Donaire sets up a more competitive match ups against WBA top dog Guillemo Rigenduex or WBC strap carrier Abner Mares.

HEAVYWEIGHT TIFF GOT A KLIT
In reprise of their lackluster 2008 affair; current  WBO/WBA/IBF heavyweight champion “Dr. Steelhammer” Wladimir Klitchsko (57-3, 50 KOs) engages powerful but dreadfully slow opponent Tony “the Tiger” Thompson (36-2, 24 KOs) over 12 or less rounds at the Stade de Suisse in Berne, Switzerland, Saturday at 5 PM on Epix.

WILL ANYTHING BE DIFFERENT THIS TIME AROUND?
No. Although Thompson has knocked out 5 of his last 5 foes since being whacked out by Klit, expect Wlad to out box and out wit the slower and cruder boxer in Thompson. I see Klitschko dropping the hammer stopping Tony under 10 frames.

ESPN JOINT AT THE “JOINT”
As per usual, the popular fight series “ESPN Friday Night Fights” kicks off the boxing weekend. Each installment of the decorated show features news, analysis of upcoming bouts, interviews, celebrity guests offering insight into the world of boxing, and competitive scraps. This week’s card showcases gifted featherweight (128) Javier Fortuna (19-0, 14 KOs) squaring off tested but often bested pug Cristobal Cruz (39-13-3, 23 KOs) in a proposed 10 rounds of pound at the Joint inside the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, NV, Friday at 10 PM ET.
