WOULD DIFFERENT SCORING MAKE LESS FEEL BOXING IS FIXED?

Mafioso Frankie Carbo Once Ran Boxing!

HISTORIAN THINKS MAFIA RAN BOXING BETTER!

San Francisco, CA– Historian Ronald Marshall thinks that atrocious scoring in professional boxing was less prevalent when the Mafia ran the game in the days of Frankie Carbo and Blinky Palermo. “I know I’m addicted to an extent (to boxing), so I’ll continue to watch it. When the Mob ran the game, there may have been more dives, but I think the scoring was better than it is today!”

HOW ABOUT OLYMPIC ICE SKATING TYPE OF SCORING?

In Olympic Ice Skating, three judges score a competition. And they judge an event like in an equitable manner. Let’s for the sake of conversation, toss out the 10 point must system employed today. In 2008, the International Skating Union ruled to reduce the number of judges from 12 to 9. Because the top and bottom extreme scores are dropped and two more scores are dropped at random, the scores of 5 judges will determine the outcome of competitions.

WE NEED TO CHANGE BOXING BEFORE IT’S DEAD!

If we were to use this in boxing, we score a perfect dominant round a 10. The loser can get less. If the round was real close, the losers score would be 9.5. If the loser was to get dropped or beaten badly, that fighter could get a 8.5 or so. For those of you that think this is a too bold of a move, anything would be better than the current system, just ask Richard Abril, Gabriel Campillo, or Erislandy Lara.

GO BACK TO THE REFEREE BEING THE LONE SCORER?

Although this might in the minds of some lead to the continuation of bad scoring, you put three referees on hold and don’t announce who he or she is until 30 minutes before the fight. In the early days of boxing, the referee decided the winner at the end of the bout, a practice that is still used for some professional bouts in Great Britain. In the early 20th century, it was common for only the referee to score bouts by the number of rounds won, this before the 10-point must system and the use of judges became the norm.

LATE “KING ARTHUR WAS AS FAIR AS THEY CAME!

Referee and judge Arthur Mercante, a Hall of Fame official who passed away two years ago this month, “King Arthur” as I jokingly referred to him in his presence, used to “bite his tongue” when he witnessed robberies in boxing. If we went back to the referee being the sole arbitrator, some say that there aren’t enough honest “Mercante” types in boxing. To that I say, appoint a “straight” boxing czar (I’m available) and the mucked up decisions would end. I know who the honest judges are, and I know those that are less than competent, or worse!

ANYTHING WOULD BETTER THAN “A FIXED SPORT”

Glenn “Inept of Crooked?” Trowbridge

When a poll last year in San Francisco asked 100 persons if boxing was a fixed sport, 72 casual sports fans said they thought it was. When Las Vegan’s Glenn Trowbridge and Jerry Roth gave Saturday’s fight between Richard Abril and Brandon Rios to Rios, it sickened me, and surely cemented that notion in the minds of many that boxing is “rigged!”

EVERYBODY HAS A BAD DAY AT WORK!

For those that say everybody has a bad day at work, Trowbridge scored the Manny Pacquiao-Juan Manuel Marquez III fight last November to Manny, another fight in which most people and a vast majority of ringside writers thought Marquez won. Even if you thought Pacquiao won, nobody thought, like Trowbridge, that Manny won 8-4 in rounds!

THE NUMBERS SIMPLY DON’T LIE!

If that is 72% figure posted above is even remotely close to what the masses think, we have a broken system that is so flawed the sport of boxing will continue to lose what is already a dying fan base.

VOTE ON “IS BOXING FIXED” & ABRIL-RIOS” SCORING POLL!
You can vote on whether or not you think boxing is fixed and who won the Richard Abril-Brandon Rios. The polls are located in the left margin.
