“HUNT” WINS EDDIE FUTCH AWARD FOR TOP TRAINER
San Francisco, CA– When I first met Virgil Hunter, the trainer of World super middleweight champion Andre Ward, some of his training methods seemed a bit extreme to me. Take for example, Hunt’s having then amateur star Ward pushing an automobile around a Hayward, CA parking lot for strength. Ward would go onto to win the Olympic Gold Medal in 2004 and recently captured the Showtime Super Six 168 lb. Boxing Tournament. Along the way, in four fights, Ward might have lost two or three rounds, thus the reason for my naming him “Fighter of The Year” in December, long before the other accolades came forth. Also on the show, boxing writer and our lone Manny Pacquiao “supporter,” the incomparable writer and radio personality Kevin Perry.
