UFC SHOW ON FOX TV A FLOP!
San Francisco, CA– In November, Fox TV drew nearly 11,000,000 viewers for their initial UFC broadcast. That night, the main event of Junior Dos Santos-Cain Velasquez lasted just 1:04. To many this was a bummer. That being said, those 64 seconds were far more exciting than the three fights televised last night, this even though UFC President Dana White and matchmaker Joe Silva went all out to try and insure this show would be a winner.
EX-CHAMP EVANS WINS TO SET UP TITLE FIGHT
In the main event Rashad Evans went to 17-1-1 with a shutout unanimous five round decision Phil Davis in a lackluster match. The points (50-45) win assured Evans that he will get his head handed to him in April by UFC light heavyweight (205 lbs) champion Jon Jones. Based on their recent fights, betting on Jones looks like the best bet in fighting outside of Floyd Mayweather over Manny Pacquiao,
if that fight were to ever happen. It wasn’t a tough fight for Evans, as he was just so much better than the “green” Davis (9-1) in a mismatch. Evans, a former UFC light heavyweight titleholder, was admittedly disappointed afterwards.
BATTLE OF THE “BIG MOUTHS” WAS ALL TALK
One-time All American wrestler Chael Sonnen went to 27-11-1 with a unanimous decision over Britain’s Michael Bisping (22-4) in a match that featured two of the best talkers in the world of combat sports. With little action in the fight, people watching the fight card with me were totally bored. The scores were 30-27 & 29-28 twice. Sonnen, who was suspended after a positive Steroid test in 2010, this after nearly beating UFC middleweight (185) champ Anderson Silva, with the win locked in a Silva rematch in Brazil before an expected crowd of 40,000 fans.
CURTAIN RAISING FIGHT RESULTED IN UPSET
Three time All American wrestler Chris Weidman pulled off a major upset when he outpointed Brazil’s Demian Maia (15-4) after three-five minute rounds. Seeing Maia won the 2007 Abu Dhabi Combat Club Submission World Championships, he was the favorite. But the handicappers were wrong as Weidman was able to take Maia down a couple of times which allowed him to eek out a win. The split decision scores were 29-28 twice for Weidman and 29-28 for Maia. With the win Weidman is now 8-0.
